Cheek Blocks
Cheek Blocks
Cheek Blocks (Cheekblocks) or Turning Blocks are designed to be attached to a flat surface, allowing the line to run parallel to that surface. Mounted on the Deck, they are used as sheet and Foot Blocks, and as Deck Organizer Blocks. Mounted on a Spar, they are used for Halyards and Reef lines, some are designed specifically for mounting on curved surfaces. Cheek Blocks generally allow the line to turn at angles up to 180°. Often available in single and double versions, and sometimes with an integral (or separate) angle pad or Jammer.

Schaefer Cheek Blocks for Flat Surfaces

Stainless Steel Cheek Block features elevated 2 3/8" (60mm) Delrin Sheave with Black SS Top plate. Unit is as RF 879X, above, but lower Sheave is replaced with a large fixed spacer, allowing the strength of the Single Block, RF 871X, at twice the height above Deck. Kenyon Cheek Blocks for Flat Surfaces
Commonly used on Kenyon 1 1/4" Traveller Systems and in other applications. Smaller blocks with an integral curved base are also available, See Cheek Blocks for Curved Surfaces, below.

SS Cheek Block w/ 1 7/8" Sheaves - Double: K-2030-2:

Stainless Steel Double Cheek Block with 1 7/8" OD Delrin Sheaves mounts with (2) 1/4" RH screws on 1 9/16" centers. Block is (maximum) 2 13/16" long x 2" wide x 1 3/8" high, and is suitable for line up to 7/16" diameter.

 

Sparcraft Cheek Blocks
Fairlead Cheek Blocks are commonly used on the Mast or Boom, to redirect Halyards or Reef lines. See also, Sparcraft Halyard Fairleads & Spectacles.
 
Fairlead Block - 40mm: FSP 48-401:

Fairlead Cheek Block is commonly used on Isomat and Sparcraft Masts to redirect Reef lines and Halyards. Block has a 40mm (1 9/16") turned delrin Sheave and Aluminum cheeks. Unit is 73mm (2 7/8") long x 45mm (1 3/4") wide, and fastens with (3) 6mm FH screws. Formerly produced by FranceSpar, Block is also commonly used on Deck. Suitable for up to 14mm (9/16") line, Sheave is not replaceable in this one piece unit.

 

Cheek Blocks for Curved Surfaces
Originally designed for mounting on Spars for use with Halyards and Reef lines, these Cheek Blocks are suitable for use on a variety of curved surfaces. Note that curved Cheek Block Base Pad Adapters, above, are available to adapt Schaefer Series 05 and 07 Cheek Blocks to fit curved surfaces.
 
SS Cheek Block w/ 1 1/16" Delrin Sheave, Curved Base: K-140X:
Cheek Block with curved base is used on smaller Kenyon Booms for Outhaul and Reef lines. SS Cheek Block has 1 1/16" OD Delrin Sheave suitable for use with line up to 3/8" diameter. Base is 3 3/16" long x 7/8" wide, and fastens to spar with (4) 3/16" (#10) RH screws on 2 11/16" (horizontal) and 1/2" (vertical) centers.
