| Pintles and Gudgeons | ||
| Pintles and Gudgeons comprise the hinging mechanism
on outboard-mounted Rudders. Pintles always incorporate a Pin, Gudgeons always have a hole
for a Pin, either may be attached to the rudder or to the Transom. In standard
configuration, Pintles are attached to the Rudder, and Gudgeons are attached to the
Transom. Less common are Pintles that attach to the Transom, referred to as Transom
Pintles, the Gudgeons they are used with (attached to the Rudder) are known as Rudder
Gudgeons. It is not uncommon for a boat to use only Gudgeons
with removable Hinge Pins connecting 2 Transom Gudgeons with a Rudder Gudgeon between. The
J/24 currently uses this arrangement. For reference, the J/24
package includes (4) 1/2" Transom Gudgeons (Sch 81-46), (2)
1/2" Hinge Pins (Sch 81-49P), and (1 ea.) short (upper)
and long (lower) Rudder Gudgeons, (Sch 81-47S, Sch 81-48L).
The J/30 (among others) uses 2 (double) Transom Gudgeons and a
Rudder Gudgeon with each. Pintles and Gudgeons are listed below by configuration, and by Pin size. If you require Pintles or Gudgeons not listed here, please contact us with details on the configuration and dimensions you require. Please note that Pintles and Gudgeons are all based on Pin size. Thus, for example, any 1/2" Pintle will be compatible with all 1/2" Gudgeons. Pintles |

Standard (Rudder) Pintles Standard (Rudder-mounted) Pintles are attached to the Rudder and have an integral Pin. It is common to use 2 Pintles with different length Pins, allowing the lower (longer) Pintle (L) to be fitted first which makes it easier to fit the upper (short) one (S). Pin lengths given are total lengths, subtract strap width to get a protruding length. |
