Schaefer Type 2
(Aluminum) Rope Clutches
The Schaefer 2nd generation Clutch (Halyard or Sheet Stopper, or Line Jammer), known as the EGR
(Easy Grip & Release), was introduced in 1983. It featured
all aluminum (black anodized) construction, except for S.S. bolts and springs. It was also
available in 2 sizes: the smaller handled line 1/4"-3/8", the larger
3/8"-1/2". Both sizes were commonly available as single units, or in banks of
two or three. Originally these units had color-coded plastic-tipped handles, but later on
the handles were anodized in different colors and had no plastic tips (much less gooey in
the hot sun). Although they gripped and released easily, under extreme loads they didn't
hold as well as the First generation units. The EGR (Type 2) Clutches were produced from
1983-1993. A limited supply of these items are still available.
To determine which Size of Type 2 Rope Clutch you
have, measure the handle width (3/8" or 5/8"). Except for the Replacement
Handles listed below, no other parts are available for these units. Schaefer Type 2 Small Rope

2 Small - Single Rope Clutch: Sch 71-41X:
Schaefer Type 2 Small Aluminum Single Rope Clutch is designed for use
with line from 1/4"-3/8" (6-10mm) diameter. Attaches to
Deck with (2) #10 (3/16" or 5mm) FH screws on 3 3/4" centers. Base is (maximum)
4 1/2" long x 3/4" wide. Unit is (maximum) 3 1/8" high (with handle down).
Suitable for most applications on boats to 28' LOA.

Schaefer Type 2 Small Aluminum Double Rope Clutch is designed for use
with line from 1/4"-3/8" (6-10mm) diameter. Attaches to
Deck with (4) #10 (3/16" or 5mm) FH screws on 3 3/4" (fore and aft) x 5/8"
(athwartships) centers. Base is (maximum) 4 1/2" long x 1 3/8" wide. Unit is
(maximum) 3 1/8" high (with handle down). Suitable for most applications on boats to 28' LOA. *

Deck with (6) #10 (3/16" or 5mm) FH screws on 3 3/4" (fore and aft) x 5/8"
and 1 1/4" (athwartships) centers. Base is (maximum) 4 1/2" long x 2" wide.
Unit is (maximum) 3 1/8" high (with handle down). Suitable for most applications on boats to 28' LOA.
